We’re thrilled to share some long-awaited news for Wisconsin Nurse Practitioners: Governor Evers has officially signed Assembly Bill 257, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 17 — the APRN Modernization Act — into law on August 8, 2025.

What This Means for Wisconsin NPs
Independent Practice Authority. After completing 3,840 hours of supervised clinical experience under a physician or dentist, you are now legally allowed to practice independently — including opening your own practice — without a collaborative agreement.
New APRN License. Wisconsin now offers a dedicated APRN license for NPs, CRNAs, CNMs, and CNSs, with formal education, certification, and insurance requirements written into law.
Expanded Authority & Title Protection. Prescribing authority is built into your APRN license, and doctoral-prepared NPs may use the title “Dr.” when properly identifying their credentials.
Effective Date
This law is already in effect — as of August 10, 2025.
